Let’s be real in Anime “goofy” characters are a dime a dozen so I had to pick the first one that came to mind:
TK from Angel Beats!
Angel Beats! Is not for the faint of heart but I heartily recommend it to people as a nice summary as perhaps why so many people love anime. This anime doesn’t really fit into one genre, has great art, story-telling, and comedy. Not only does this anime have a lovely intro but TK’s antics positively shine due to the wonderfully used art of Juxtaposition. And that’s saying quite a bit since I prefer to watch all my anime either raw (
that should be read as: “muddling through and getting the general gist of what’s going on like a second grader watching a doctoral thesis”) or subbed (thankfully, I read exceptionally fast).
Most times he’s in the background at any given moment bobbing his head and snapping his fingers to a beat, spouting random English phrases at random, or out-right dancing even while serious conversations are going on.
Come to find out he’s paying attention the whole time…
I feel like the series simply wouldn’t be the same without him in it. I can’t go into much more detail as it would spoil the series if you haven’t seen it. I Love this guy.
The guy is amazing in his randomness but not at all useless.
Remember this blog’s intro page? “Normal” is relative.
BTW: If ever there was a series that I would tell people to watch how effective, and compelling good story-telling can be in only 13 episodes with almost twenty characters (4 main ones)…this is my go to one. You love the characters and are invested in the story line to such an extent it’s honestly astounding. It’s far from perfect but it’s pretty astounding.
